Saturday 21st May, 2022 - Demons be gone
Hello and welcome to my newsletter!
Another season 2 instalment…
I’ve had a lot of negative feedback from the world following the last three issues, specifically an epic tsunami of hate. So I’m going to move back to the simpler format. The big tech sandwich was a nice experiment, and I personally still like the metaphor, but I could do without the demons that ensued.
Both halves of the universe hate me in equal measures at the minute. It’s just been one of those weeks.
The plan going forward is to write more blog posts, and keep the newsletter to links and podcasts with a short intro. I’ll have to find another way to handle the world’s avalanches with my very limited resources I guess.
It’s the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee (2-5 June), she’s been reigning for 70 years. That’s incredible. So much has changed over that period, more than at any other time, and it’s amazing what she has accomplished. The New Elizabethan Age episode from the Rest is History Podcast does a fun retrospective. The Queen has done a tremendous job bridging old fashioned Victorian and Edwardian times and values with current day pop culture, while reshaping an entire world empire to the Commonwealth which is very much centered around creators. In many ways she created an environment that made many of the movements of past decades possible, even if it was a bit of a bumpy ride at times. Really worth the listen.
Best wishes to your Majesty the Queen for the Jubilee!
Crypto has been very chaotic this week with the Luna blockchain running into some serious trouble. The whole tech sector is in a difficult place with many tech stocks down large double figure amounts. With that in mind I found Peter McCormack’s episode on Hyperbitcoinisation super interesting, discussing how the overall transition to Bitcoin could play out, specifically around some of the dangers that might arise from a potential large gap between early adopters and late comers, and what effects that might have to society.
I wrote a blog post, and re-posting an oldie that is somewhat relevant:
The good homeless person’s (and society’s) dilemma - Exploration of one of the main problems that society needs to solve, a topic area worth discussing
Re-post: The coming revolution in freelance web development - A look at past, present and future of freelance web development
Roman Farrow: Post Privacy Age (Recode Media) - Yep everything is probably being monitored, oh well, get an idea of what that will look like in the future in this episode
Windows_logon.wav (20000 Hz Podcast) - Much more interesting than the episode title, includes korean zither, japanese sakohatchi, turkish lute, and andIan flutes, a surprising amount of subtle and nuanced thought goes into designing audio design systems
Elon Musk doesn’t understand Twitter (Tech Dirt Podcast) - Ranty but that’s the nature of the topic, he makes a lot of good points, however I still think Elon could navigate the ship to interesting waters
The Risks of Hypercoinization with Rob Hamilton (What Bitcoin Did Podcast) - Discussion around a topic I have been wondering about a lot, namely how will the transition to Bitcoin pan out, specifically the gap that will be created between early adopters and latecomers
The New Elizabethan Age (The Rest is History Podcast) - Very fun episode, that delves into the queen’s 70 year reign, and how much culture has changed over that period, interesting historical perspective and modern pop culture music and art references, including the Sex Pistols, David Bowie and Brian May
Computex 2022, Elon Musk vs Twitter Bots, Apple e-ink displays (Vergecast Podcast) - Last minute addition, lots of topical items discussed, some cool tech, very funny in places, but also kind of earrie in places, there’s a whole piece about sandwiches, I started questioning comedy itself while listening to this, and am now worried about generational trojan horses, I sometimes worry too much
That’s all from me…
