Saturday 14th October, 2023 - Exhausted (Issue #136)
Another emergency issue to ensure something gets sent out. No more physical media, lots more lies. How’s that total societal processing capacity going for you?
Hello and welcome to my newsletter!
Another season 2 instalment…
It’s Sunday today. No sooner have I sent out last week’s issue and the by now familiar cycle has started again. Starvation, thirsting, sleep depravation throughout the night, and it’s looking unlikely I’ll have any electricity to last me to next week’s issue. So once again, I’m putting together this emergency issue to ensure at least something gets sent out. I’m exhausted. That’s going to be the title. I can’t think of anything else.
The last 2 podcasts I listened to were both pretty great:
The beginning of the end of physical media (Changelog & Friends Podcast) https://changelog.com/friends/16
The great Pixel 8 camera debate (Vergecast Podcast) https://podcasts.google.com/feed/aHR0cHM6Ly9mZWVkcy5tZWdhcGhvbmUuZm0vdmVyZ2VjYXN0/episode/Nzc4YjkzNWEtMzUwZS0xMWVkLWFjNmUtZGJjZjE1NDQyMWZj?sa=X&ved=0CAYQkfYCahcKEwjA0u2xjeWBAxUAAAAAHQAAAAAQNg
So many strange synchronicities as I listened to these, traces of which appear in this week’s notes.
Update: Oh boy oh boy it’s been a tough week, but it’s Saturday morning and I’m still alive. Here’s some more great podcasts I was able to listen to.
Podcasts
Dickson Despommier: the perfect environmental city of the future (Andrew Keen Podcast) - Good episode even if the ending was a bit hard to watch. Despommier turns into a bit of an ass hat imo, even though he’s got a lot of interesting things to say about cities. https://www.iheart.com/podcast/269-keen-on-70627725/episode/should-environmentalists-be-utopian-dickson-despommier-125183410
Micro.blogging with Manton Reece (Shop Talk Show Podcast) - Great discussion about social media and blogging etc. There’s still a load we could do with boring old personal websites. Maybe that’s where the revolution will head to next. https://shoptalkshow.com/586
How the Federal Reserve Works With Joseph Wang (What Bitcoin Did Podcast) - Nothing Earth shattering but it’s interesting to hear the perspective from someone that worked in the FED. https://www.whatbitcoindid.com/podcast/how-the-federal-reserve-works
The TV of the Future Costs Zero Dollars (Vergecast Podcast) - Nothing new really ever happens with TV tech, but this is super innovative even if it sounds weird at first. https://podcasts.google.com/feed/aHR0cHM6Ly9mZWVkcy5tZWdhcGhvbmUuZm0vdmVyZ2VjYXN0/episode/YjBiZWNkMjAtMjI1NC0xMWVlLWFkZGItNjdiYWM5NzFlYmZm?sa=X&ved=0CAYQkfYCahcKEwiIsL7oovSBAxUAAAAAHQAAAAAQBg
Parasocial Relatioships: That Podcaster is Your Friend! (Stuff You Should Know Podcast) - I thought this was a tremendous episode handling a subject we are still all getting to grips with. New media is bizarre, the dynamics are so uncannily like real life yet not. I expect it will all be totally normal for the next generation, but for us that have gone through it as we were building it, it’s sort of a twilight zone, but it’s wonderful in places. https://podcasts.google.com/feed/aHR0cHM6Ly93d3cub21ueWNvbnRlbnQuY29tL2QvcGxheWxpc3QvZTczYzk5OGUtNmU2MC00MzJmLTg2MTAtYWUyMTAxNDBjNWIxL2E5MTAxOGE0LWVhNGYtNDEzMC1iZjU1LWFlMjcwMTgwYzMyNy80NDcxMGVjYy0xMGJiLTQ4ZDEtOTNjNy1hZTI3MDE4MGMzM2UvcG9kY2FzdC5yc3M/episode/Yjk5MTllOTgtZDQ0OC00YzM4LTlmMDctYjA5NzAwZGFiZDJl?sa=X&ved=0CAYQkfYCahcKEwiIsL7oovSBAxUAAAAAHQAAAAAQEg
